She Listens Like Spring and She Talks Like June

It has been 7 years since the song was written, and it still sounds like it’s meant for today. Contrary to popular beliefs, I don’t believe that the song is about a broken relationship or anything like that at all. What I make of it is not important. But, what it means fits where I’m at well.

Now that she’s back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there’s time to change
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June

Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Now that she’s back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there’s room to grow

Now that she’s back in the atmosphere
I’m afraid that she might think of me as plain ol’ Jane
Told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you’re wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had . . . and me

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way

-Drops of Jupiter by Train

I wish you could see the song the way I do.

But, that really isn’t the point. It seems amazing how a song like this, along with a list of other great ones, could have that touch of timelessness about it. It defies the effects of time. That’s amazing.

Time changes things, people say. For the most part of it, I think that’s true. We change, and so do the things around us. For better or worse, that’s a whole different story. But what if we can have something that doesn’t change – something timeless? Something, despite time, remains the same.

It seems rather far-fetched – the concept of having something that doesn’t change. But, I think that is exactly what we are looking for. I think deep down, all of us are looking for something timeless to call our own. Maybe that’s why we feel the way we feel, we say the things we say, and we do the things we do.

Maybe that’s why I am where I am.

  1. This song is one of the ones I hold really close and dear to me. I agree, I don’t see it as a break-up song either, but I suspect we both see it differently from where we’re standing.

And honestly? I like that fact. =)
