A New Fall: Articles

Here are some articles about my band, A New Fall.

King Ly Chee South East Asia Tour (Malaysia) by Riz of King Ly Chee

20 December 2004

Then last night was the show that we’ve been waiting for the entire tour, our show with the lovely MYxHC hardcore kids (also in KL) – Cassandra, Second Combat, Kids On the Move, Kharisma, Oddity, A New Fall. The show was unbelievable from start to finish. When we first arrived we hadn’t eaten lunch or breakfast and the show started early. We wanted to eat, but the first band was Oddity who we did not want to miss and they did not disappoint! Their guitar player was amazing. Then we were starving so we had to leave. Went to burger king and ran back to watch A New Fall who were INCREDIBLE, got the crowd super pumped up. Then came the legends of Malaysian hardcore: Second Combat and they set the place off for sure fingers were pointing, kids were dancing. The best part of these guys is when you stand in the very back of the room; the voices of the audience were louder then the band. That was insane! The kids were screaming the words so loud, that I couldn’t hear the band. That was unbelievable. Then came Kharisma, featuring our friend Dicky who is organizing our JB show on this coming Saturday, and they were off the hook! So good…we’re playing with them again on Sunday in Singapore and I can’t wait to see them again. Then came the hero’s: Cassandra and since this was their first show in like 5 months, the kids just exploded into Cassandra’s set. From start to finish they went totally apes hit for Cassandra. Then came a new band called Kids on The Move who were great too. Kids here call them the Comeback Kid of Malaysia! Smile that tells you the type of hardcore they play so passionately. They were awesome and really young kids too so that means their future is going to be full of awesome music and hope for the MYxHC scene.

We had the chance to share the stage with Malaysia’s finest hardcore bands and of course, King Ly Chee representing Hong Kong hardcore! It was such an honour to have had the stage with these bands. Though there were some misfortunes during our set, it was still a blast. Thanks a lot to the organizers (Dyslexia Records, First Stance Records, United Front Records, Beauty Moment) for slotting us in. And again, we salute all the hardcore bands out there. Keep it real. Unite Asian hardcore!

Malaysia isn’t really known for its music. When I think of Malaysia, I think of friendly people dancing to the traditional Asian music. Or maybe of one of those documentary’s on National Geographic, showing pretty Malaysian girls dancing, and doing rituals and stuff like that. In other words, it’s far from our own world, and we don’t really know what’s going on over there. And If we would, we would know that they’ve got some great bands over there. Not many people will think of metalcore/ hardcore when referring to Malaysia, but A New Fall shows we’re wrong.

Since this is the first time that their CD leaves Malaysia, I didn’t really knew what to expect from this band, but they blew me away from the first second I heard them. You could compare them to Morda, even though the guys from A New Fall probably never heard of them before. They say they’re influenced by Darkest Hour and Atreyu, but they manage to go beyond these bands. They involve lots of metal-influences in their music, which makes the whole Morda-sound complete. The brutal vocals give their music a surplus, probably because it gives the music more power, more persuasiveness. But still, it’s pretty hard to place this band in a corner with other bands, mainly because I don’t know how the scene is over there, and to which music they listen. But this only makes it more attractive.

Even though this demo was pretty low budget, it sounds really clean. It doesn’t happen very often that you hear a demo of this quality. Again, a surprise. The demo takes off with fast, shivering riffs, combined with double bass-drums. When you add words like “Crawl into darkness, when truth does not exist. The human existence. The failure in sentence, bloodstains on the floor”, you know what to expect. Dark music, driven by hate and powerlessness. They talk about feelings, but in a dark, negative way. Nothing wrong with that, especially when it fits the music.

Like I already said, they bring a lot of metal-influences into their music. For example, the metallic riff in “Portraits of love and death” could be taken from a heavy metal band. But then again, the aggressive drums give it an original sound. But the leading thread through the album stays negativity: “Your words are feeding my ignorance, shattering my ignorance. Putting an end to my patience. Now I’ve drawn the line. To the end, you’ll live in shadows of my avenge.”

The most impressive song, in my opinion, is “Of hatred and lies”. Even though the other songs are great too, this one just has got this something special. The vocals sound a bit different from the other songs, and the drums are more chaotic, and changing. They use lots of changes in their music, in “Of hatred and lies” they change from one part to another without using some kind of bridge. Special, but nice. Again, they use their dark, impressive lyrics, but the Atreyu-like vocals take it to another dimension. And when they bring in the acoustic guitars during a breakdown, the Atreyu-like vocals are even more impressive. The song is drawn to an end with their typical riffs, but in a fantastic way.

The only thing that frustrates me about bands like this is that they don’t get a chance in Europe. When “Of hatred and lies” would be performed by let’s say Atreyu, to keep it really simple, it would be a hit. I’m quite sure of that. But I don’t know how much success they have in their home country, so maybe I’m just irritated without a reason. Anyway, these guys deserve to get a chance. They have got a lot of time left, because they’re still quite young, so maybe they’ll make it anyway. But ‘till then, I can’t wait for their next release.

Track list:
1. Predestination At Lost
2. Portraits of Love and Death
3. Decaying Compulsion
4. Through The Perfect Glass
5. Of Hatred and Lies
